  1. I think one must try to define “to be American” which is impractical, and probably impossible. But De Tocqueville must have something right when he says there is less distance between the highest and lowest class. Possibly because a vast majority of Americans were farmers, or laborers, with a just blossoming merchant class. Certainly there were wealthy farmers, exampled by many of our Father’s and leading men, and education was not so widely attainable.

    When your wealthy class is only slightly more educated, and only differs in degree of labor and time but not profession, one would have to see an overall equality in the population. Though what is seen and what is can be very different.
