When did the stomach of our nation overcome the mind and the spirit?
In Plato’s Republic the soul of a human is understood in three parts, composed and properly distributed is that of a healthy soul. First was intellect, the mind, then the strength of passion, the chest, and finally the appetite, the stomach. It was understood that a man could be ruled by any of these, but the wise and good man was always ruled by intellect which in turn controlled the remainder of his soul.
Madness is what ensues once the appetites have had no recourse and no push back. Madness is what we find when a nation’s only occupation is the satisfaction of desires. Specifically when intellect is shouted down to allow only the appetites their unencumbered fulfillment, and noble passions are subdued with lies and fears, simply to block out any emotion past pleasure seeking.
Little boys are taught to explore themselves sexually, but never to dream of nobility and honor. Children are fed lies of constant comfort to maintain an easy flow of misinformation and untruths; we can keep you from want, we can keep you from fear, we can guarantee you food and entertainment and pleasure all you need do is listen and obey. Obey who? Obey the State, obey the agency, obey the regulatory authority, obey the endless edicts from endless and fathomless laws. And who informed these lawmakers? The People? God? Science? Experts trained and paid for by the State, scientists trained and paid for by the State; these individuals who so rarely lift their eyes to glimpse at the world outside of their classroom, outside of the lab, outside of the regulatory office. Intellect? No, self-propelling indoctrination and propaganda!
Madness leads us to limit everything that has the potential to develop us and provide for our good health. Madness drives us to libertine ways, reducing all boundaries that provide stability and structured growth. When was it that natural arguments became demonized? We won’t eat artificially inseminated cows, or genetically altered foods, but then turn around and argue for artificial insemination for same sex partners, or worse, give the nod to nature through the enlistment of a donor and then turn back and deny the product of that natural act a natural childhood.
And the saddest fact of all, we all agree we have moved past the possibility of actually fighting for what we believe, even though it would be a true fight for survival; our existence as a people, a nation, an idea hangs in the very balance…and we all agree not to raise our voices too high, even though our opponents have done so for years; we agree to be civil, despite the condoms and urine and feces thrown at our champions and heroes; somehow we remain mostly calm and collected, even though we have the means of forcing our claims and removing the agitators.
Perhaps it is time to allow cold hard intellect to stroke the fires of emotion and drive a hard lesson upon the stomach of our nation. The competition that forces the body to strive to its very limits awakening the slumbering spirit is oft the only cure for indulgence; sometimes only exertion to exhaustion is the only cure for a night of wine and extravagance.
