Today is Memorial Day. That glorious day of cookouts, time off from work, and fun in the sun. But there’s more to the story (as there usually is). Go read this article. Don’t worry; I’ll wait (and the link will just take you to the Wall Street Journal; nothing malicious).
That, my friends, is an example of tyranny. 36 million dead in a famine caused by one man’s agricultural program. A regime that cares nothing about its people, so long as they do not try to oust it. A government that seeks to control its people instead of serving them. It is the sort of thing that countless American soldiers have shed their blood to prevent, to destroy, both at home and abroad. Today we remember their sacrifice. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not saying that enjoying the liberty they have fought to preserve is not a fitting way to spend the holiday. All I’m saying is not to lose sight of the true reason for the holiday. Remember the men who fought and died, because without them you wouldn’t be celebrating today. And while you’re at it, remember the men and women currently serving in the U.S. Military. The fight against tyranny is one that will continue for as long as this earth endures, and there will always be a need for those who are ready to carry on the struggle.
So go; enjoy your day off & time with your family. Just don’t forget those who sacrificed everything to make it possible, and those who stand ready to do the same.
