“We, the citizens of a country that liberated itself from apartheid, have lost our sense of power. Instead of creating a vibrant economy we have created an army of people dependent on social rights and benefits…Huge unemployment is camouflaged by a pseudo-welfare state. The ANC is undermining the values we fought for, of equality, dignity, and freedom.”
-Mamphela Ramphele, Christian Science Monitor, “Interview: South Africa’s ‘candidate of conscience’ speaks on the eve of elections.”
From the quote above, one can see that South Africa has quickly departed from the goals it sought to achieve when it ended apartheid. Perhaps with the good intention of helping the poor, the African National Congress has enslaved its people to a welfare system. It well deserves the name of slavery, and it is unfortunate to note that Dr. Ramphele’s party is down in the polls for the present election.
Our own country, the United States, heads toward the same direction. The scourges of welfare and dependency are depriving people of the will to self-government across the nation, especially with the lackluster economy. It was reported recently that 800,000 people just dropped off the labor market–neither employed nor seeking employment! I cannot help believe but that the democratic party welcomes these changes. Like the ANC, the Democratic party wishes to fetter people to welfare or government employment, which keeps them voting Democratic for the sake of their jobs, food, and lodging. A modern day case of bread and circuses! And should blacks in this country, a race which is now viewed as married to the Democratic party and the welfare state, join the Republican party and preach the doctrine of freeing oneself from the welfare state or “the Democratic plantation”–as Herman Cain trenchantly put it, they are denounced as Oreos and Uncle Toms. This is similar to how an ANC spokesman told a crowd in South Africa that people who receive welfare and don’t vote ANC are thieves!
Another sad similarity between South Africa and the United States is the dumbing down of education. Education has traditionally been viewed as the means by which people learned to better themselves. But, a lack of education makes for foolish voters and people unable to better themselves. The ANC appears to have been particularly complicit in the destruction of South Africa’s system of education by installing their own national curriculum, which lead to poorer results among the students. It is no wonder that conservatives are leery of a similar action by the Federal government! But, progressive ideals have filtered into the American K-12 school system, and what is the result? One in seven adults cannot read things more difficult than a children’s picture book! Schooling is not seen as important when people can live off of government assistance. They have lost the will to better themselves.
As much as Democrats tell us to feel for the poor and that they need welfare programs, the result welfare programs produced in South Africa was mass poverty. This country also stands as one of the most crime-ridden in the world. The impetus to self-government and self-improvement is necessary to prosperity! God has given people the talents to improve their station in life as well as the society around them. However, when people have been brainwashed into thinking that they must needs rely on government, they lose all desire for independence, freedom, and dignity. Those things which are so necessary for prosperity. May America learn this salutary lesson from South Africa!
