My friend showed me a terrible video in which straight, white young men apologized for being straight, white men. (Would their offense have been mitigated if they were gay, white men?) Here is the video:
This video offers numerous points which should anger any decent person—white or non-white, man or woman. The most frustrating perhaps is that skin color ensures success in this country. Somehow, there exists an overarching white male power structure that awards status, wealth, and happiness based not on merit or talent, but by skin color. Where was this white power structure when I needed to take a job selling fish after college? Only now, five years later, am I near to realizing my dream of working as a writer. Life is easy for no one. People don’t reward whiteness with status and money. Instead, there are cases, affirmative action and bonuses being paid to Washington officials for hiring minorities for government jobs, where being white actually serves as a handicap.
What we see in this video is a part of the campaign against the West, marked by the divide and conquer strategy of class warfare. They strive to make white men feel bad about themselves through making them feel bad about their heritage. (Curiously, most of these same Liberals are white men themselves.) We’re the colonialist oppressors of minorities around the globe! We owe the colored peoples of the world and women something in reparation for the repressive ways of our ancestors! Or do we?
One thing that liberals refuse to recognize about the past is that certain barbarities and inequalities were universal. Whites kept black slaves? European cultures from the Ancient Greeks to the Vikings kept white slaves as well! Heck, blacks also kept black slaves. But, what is unique about European countries is that they were also the first to start ending slavery. Even as the Portuguese bought black slaves from Africans, European countries were steadily outlawing slavery universally as they had outlawed the slavery of Christians by the 10th century. The British colonies themselves saw opposition to slavery. Thomas Jefferson had proposed abolition before the Virginia House of Burgesses prior to the Revolution, and the Father of our Country, George Washington, is well known for his hatred of the institution and freeing all his slaves at the time of his death. We also know that slavery was a contentious issue during the Constitutional Convention, though its opponents were only able to end our involvement in the international slave trade.
We tend to focus on the black proponents of abolition and the civil rights movement, like Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman, and Martin Luther King. But, the abolition of slavery should have proved impossible without the support of white Americans. (White men held the majority of political power after all.) And one cannot forget that whites footed most of the bill in the war which ended slavery: 360,000 Union soldiers died during the Civil War–the grand majority of them white. Also, how would segregation and other inequities have been righted in the south without the support of the majority of whites?
We could also take the Women’s Rights Movement. This is another movement having its roots in Christian Europe. How did women gain so many rights which they did not formally possess? Not only because the white men in power voted them suffrage and other rights, but even because certain white men encouraged women to seek these rights. Women historically support the existing structure of society rather than innovations. Fyodor Dostoyevsky in particular noted that the women of his time would not be asking for rights if men had not proposed the concept of women’s rights to them. Do we see movements for women’s rights coming out of third world countries, especially Muslim countries? No, and Muslim women in secular countries would not have asked for rights unless they received the support of the men in these countries.
I cite these cases to show that, as much as whites have supported inequalities, whites were also instrumental in ending these same inequalities. The progress of enlightenment is often slow, but few cultures have shown a readiness to fight and end inequalities as the cultures of Europe and America, led on by the light of Christ in which: “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Gal. 3:28). And so, why should white men feel ashamed of being white men? We see the results of this shame in the declining birth rates of the west and the lemming-like urge for self-destruction, especially apparent in Liberal policies of abortion and euthanasia. White men ought to instead be proud of our heritage, which has tended toward freedom and equality since the preaching of the Gospel.
