Several days ago, Greta van Susteren dedicated her show to reporting on Sgt. Andrew Tahmooresi, a U.S. Marine who has been imprisoned in Mexico for over one hundred days. It’s been reported that he’s been badly treated and held for long periods of time without trial. From what I remember, his time in court has been limited to a single hearing over this course of time, which hearing the news media was not permitted to attend. The United States government has not been very proactive on his behalf, and have so far forgotten him that his mother received a notice from the military that he would be considered AWOL if he did not report to his base by a certain date! Does the U.S. government not even acknowledge that he’s being held captive in a Mexican prison? For accidentally missing the last turn before all traffic must enter the Mexican border while having firearms legal here but illegal there? Which fact he did not conceal when questioned by Mexican border patrol?
It is obvious that Tahmooresi became a criminal quite unintentionally. Why does the Obama administration not apply more pressure to the Mexican government to either have this Marine given a speedy trial, where I suspect he shall be exonerated of grave culpability, or returned here? Mexico receives tens of millions of dollars of U.S. foreign aid every year (a low estimate), we should simply refuse to send any more cash Mexico’s way until Tahmooresi receives justice. Mexico’s current manner of holding Sgt. Tahmooresi cannot be considered as other than a slap in the face to American everywhere. Why cannot Washington D.C. lift a finger on this innocent man’s behalf? The ineptitude of the Obama administration, especially when it comes to aiding military personal, frustrates one like few things can!
