Through the good offices of TFP Student Action, the scheduled profanation of a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Oklahoma City on Christmas Eve has come to my attention. Not only do they intend to pour blood upon the statue, but they have even decided to do it before St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral. And Oklahoma City gives permits for this kind of blasphemy and hate speech! Nay, they have even given a permit for religious persecution, which is what this event surely is.
It seems odd to think of a minority cult persecuting a majority religion; but, they are supported by the state in much the same way as Arianism was supported by the Roman army against Catholic civilians. The state can afflict innumerable evils upon its citizens if not limited by the rule of law. But, why speak of the Satanists as only offending one religion? As if only Catholics are offended by the profanation of a statue of St. Mary? Surely, the Orthodox, Protestants, Muslims, and people of goodwill in all places are also offended by this affront to a sacred person?
But, perhaps some people grudgingly believe that this sacrilege must occur to protect religious freedom in general. Then, shall Oklahoma city also give out permits to the Ku Klux Klan to burn crosses in front of the St. Joseph’s Old Cathedral? Is this deed also protected by the First Amendment? The two acts hold the same moral equivalence and teem with impending violence towards Christians everywhere.
But, why should I speak at length on this issue? Either one’s moral formation suffices for one to see the gross evil of the intended sacrifice or one is not worth one’s salt as a human being. Please sign TFP Student Action’s petition and contact the mayor directly (email@example.com) to protest this sacrilege on the holiest night of the year.
