Observances on the present state of affairs: adapted from an earlier writing by the same author.
The Republican Party is dead, it has been for about two or three years. The rise of Mr. Trump as a politically viable candidate shows that the OLD GOP failed to provide what it promised; to stop the liberal-progressive agenda, at the very least in Washington. Instead, the people watched as the GOP rolled over, time and time again, making little or no show even of arguing against the agenda.
The Tea Party movement was the first sign that regular middle-class, common sense folks had had enough of being told the Republican Party would stand and defend their values, enforce the Law, and keep a cap on the Progressive agenda passed into law. Now, a goodly number of people just want someone to stand up against the corruption on both sides. Mr. Trump clearly doesn’t live like the majority of his supporters, has not even shared their beliefs or values for the majority of his life, but they will trade that for an outsider who they believe can at least do what he says he will do, and one thing he says he will do is enforce the law.
I am guessing that most supporters don’t realize, or much care, about the second and third order of effects, but if all he does is build a wall and get illegal immigration under control, they will hail him a success.
Concerning the widening divide between Americans on the left and on the right, all I can say is that the Democratic Party doesn’t sound very American anymore. A Progressive and a Democratic Socialist sparring to see who can promise the most, and by extension, inevitably increase the influence and control of the central government in the lives of average Americans; it’s as if I were watching Pompey and Caesar competing to give out more bread and circuses to the poor masses of Rome!
Jim Webb was the only sane man I heard speak for the Democratic Party, and even with a D next to his name I liked the man and would listen to him. He seems to be the last of the truly patriotic Democrats; not swore to a cult of cultural suicide. He was a moderate voice, in an immoderate time.
The people of America are going to be seduced by far more strange and foreign concepts as the core values that shaped and molded this nation continue to disappear. The battle is turning like a storm, and many more players and characters are yet to be seen, but generally as it stands now, two sides exist. One side honestly believes there is an active conspiracy to destroy this nation, to level it down, out of some concept of “fairness” or “Reparations Justice”. The other side seems to be driven by outside Utopian ideologies that use and thrive on self-loathing and revisionist history, coupled with bread and circuses to enforce and enlarge a dependent class of citizens.
The Political System still works, for all that is wrong and corrupt about it, and the people are using it to show their displeasure.
