Stuka Pilot by Hans-Ulrich Rudel counts as one of the most famous memoirs from WWII. Rudel can rightly be called the greatest combat pilot of all time. During his 2,530 missions, he destroyed 800 vehicles, 519 tanks, two cruisers, the battleship Marat, and many other targets. His victories cost the Soviet war machine billions of dollars. He accomplished most of this work in the slow Stuka dive bomber. Though he also flew the faster FW-190, one senses a clear favoritism for the Stuka. As a side note, his memoirs and personal presentations on close air support inspired the developers of the A-10 “Warthog.” Also, he personally instructed Argentina’s air force, which proved highly effective during the Falklands War. Rudel’s influence spanned far beyond his time in World War II!
Rudel favored the motto: “Only he is lost who gives himself up for lost.” His combat record of flying as many as seventeen missions a day and flying through serious injuries like a gunshot wound in the shoulder, badly torn up feet after escaping Russian patrols following an unsuccessful rescue attempt of a downed Stuka crew, two 13mm bullets putting his left leg in a cast (Yes, he flew with a cast on his leg), and having his right leg amputated due to machine gun rounds. Part of Rudel’s secret lies in him engaging in sports of all kinds, hiking, and mountain climbing, which built up a strong body. The only sport he did not excel in is hunting: the one outing he describes in his memoirs almost ended with him shooting his friend Fridolin! Rudel’s favorite drink was milk, and he avoided alcohol assiduously.
While browsing the Drudge report today, I found this article. Basically, some Palestinians hung up a swastika near a thoroughfare where it might be seen by Jews. On a side note, the swastika was going the opposite direction of the Nazi swastika, which betrays the stupidity usually seen in the prejudiced. The Nazi swastika always pointed right, while this one is the more traditional swastika, originally a symbol of good luck, which might be found all over the world.
Here’s why there can be no peace between Israel and its neighbors. It may be true that the Israelis are not perfect angels, that they have committed crimes against the Palestinians, that their actions have made Palestinians live in squalor, but, unlike their enemies, they have no desire to completely annihilate the Palestinians. For, what else does flying a Nazi flag mean except that the perpetrators wish to exterminate the Jews? Sometimes, I cannot but wonder at the numerous and continuous terrorist acts committed against the Jews with relative impunity. What other civilized nation would suffer so many casualties to their civilian population and retaliate so little? American decimated the Moros of the Philippines and various American Indian tribes for much less.
Islamic extremist clerics–or, perhaps ordinary Middle Eastern clerics–preach nothing but hatred toward the Jews, and their congregations are filled with it. How can there be peace when one side is imbued with such malice? One would have hoped after the horrors of the holocaust, the Jews would have been given a measure of peace. Yet, not only do their religious enemies give them no peace, but the secular media blames Israel for producing the very hatred which the Muslims have expressed toward the Jews since 1948–as soon as the British army withdrew from the area! Those people in the media should be ashamed for giving aid and comfort to people who wish to finish what Adolf Hitler started in 1933!
